In the days of old, properties in Ipoh often featured an upstairs residence, a shopfront on the main street, and a back lane entrance. The backstreet rooms were frequently rented out for additional income, often housing noodle and soup bars. These quaint, back-alley establishments have inspired the creation of Tiga Bar in Ipoh, a modern speakeasy with a nod to the past.
To find Tiga, head down Market Lane, reputed to be Ipoh’s third Concubine Lane. Look for the black and white sign displaying the opening hours for dé Cafe & Rest House. Follow the wooden path lined with moss and hanging vines until the end. Turn left, and halfway down on the left side, you’ll find the door to Tiga.
Tiga Bar is a nostalgic space, furnished with eclectic pieces from bygone eras. The dim lighting ensures that the warmly lit bar is the focal point, making the bottles glow invitingly. It’s the perfect seat to enjoy hearing the bartenders’ stories and watching the cocktail-making action.
Founder Sunny, who also established Kiki-Lalat and Asip (beer and wine bars, respectively), ventured into the food and beverage industry after several years abroad. Upon his return, he sought a place to hang out, drink, and talk. With a love for hidden bars and recognizing a gap in the Ipoh market, Sunny brought Tiga to life.
At Tiga, bartenders James and JD introduce patrons to a menu of experimental cocktails. The menu is divided into sections highlighting three techniques: built, shaken, and stirred.
For those planning to settle in for the night, starting with the Fizzy and Built section is recommended. These low ABV beverages are easy to drink and perfect for a leisurely evening.
Tiga Bar is well worth seeking out. From its charming, hidden entrance to the knowledgeable bartenders who work with speed and finesse, the creative craft cocktails ensure a complete and memorable experience.
In a city where tradition meets modernity, Tiga Bar stands out as a hidden gem, offering a unique and enchanting experience in Ipoh’s vibrant nightlife scene.
