Celebrating the Tamil New Year is a big thing for the people of Buntong Ipoh. Also known as Thai Ponggal
(தைப்பொங்கல்) , originally celebrated
for good harvest throughout the year.
The tradition of the Tamil people is to put on the ponggal as the sun rises. Sweet rice, milk and butter are cooked upon a pot. Once the milk starts to pour out of the colourfully decorated pot, those around will say ‘”Ponggolo Ponggal” until it has finish pouring out.
If you would like to see such an occasion, come to Vallalar Anbu Nilayam Ipoh on the 15th January at 6.30pm. Anyone can come and learn about the beautiful Tamil festival.
