Kerian River

Kerian River, also known as Sungai Kerian, is a river in the northern part of the Malaysian state of Perak. The river originates from the Bintang Range. It flows westerly and discharges into the Straits of Melaka. The main tributaries are Selama River, Ijok River, Samagagah River and Ulu Mengkuang River.

Kerian River flows through the town of Parit Buntar, Perak, Nibong Tebal, Penang and Bandar Baharu, Kedah.

2Behind the serenity of Kerian River was a ferry tragedy that took place in September 1972. It claimed about 20 lives, mostly school children from Bandar Baharu, Kedah who crossed the river using the ferry to attend school in Parit Buntar, Perak. After this unfortunate incident, the ferry ceased operations and a concrete bridge was built.
