First Time In Malaysia – La Traviata

La Traviata

La Traviata is a widely acclaimed opera originally composed by Giuseppe Verdi – an Italian opera composer of the 19th century. Together with Carmen and Madame Butterfly, La Traviata is one of the world’s top 3 most popular operas.

About La Traviata

Violetta is the star of La Traviata, a club run by a hard and dangerous Eastern European and the haunt of City trader types. One of these, Al, turns up on a bender and falls for her. She, to her consternation, also falls heavily for him – so heavily indeed that she gives up her work at the club and moves in with him. But unbeknown to Al, she is terminally ill and they are running out of money.

She agrees to the demand from Jerman, Al’s father, to end the relationship, and returns to the club, where Al appears again one evening and in a fit of jealousy publicly insults her. As her illness worsens, Flora and Gaston, her friends from the club, move in to look after her. Al returns, and a compassionate Jerman arrives in the last moments before she dies.

THE ORIGIN OF ORGANISING “LA TRAVIATA” OPERA IN IPOH

“La Traviata” is the most famous opera of the world.
Knowing that the Merry Opera Company from UK will be performing the “La Traviata” in major cities of Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang, the St Andrew Festival organising committee has decided to grasp such a good opportunity to bring the professional actors and actress from Europe to perform the La Traviata opera in Ipoh.

Many people have the perception of “cultural desert” on Ipoh city, plus, the opera La Traviata has not been performed in Ipoh before. With the professional actors and actress from various countries in Europe performing the La Traviata for the first time in Ipoh, the Organising Committee hope that people from Ipoh and also other towns in Perak state will give their tremendous support to this world renown opera show and do not miss such a good opportunity. The performance of an opera show actually needs a suitable hall and in the year 2012, we found a great venue for the opera show in Ipoh and it is none other than the Grand Ballroom of the Kinta Riverfront Hotel, Ipoh.

The orgsnising of the La Traviata opera show in Ipoh city is in fact responding and echoing to the tourism promotion objective of the Perak State government since the year 2012 is the tourism year of the Perak state. One cannot deny is that the organising of the cultural and arts events is essential in promoting tourism.

ANOTHER SIGNIFICANCE OF ORGANIZING THE LA TRAVIATA OPERA SHOW IN IPOH
The existing premise of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Ipoh is listed as heritage building by the Perak state government and hence no alteration and extension can be done on it. As the church needs more rooms for its activities, the church council has decided to build a multipurpose building besides its existing premise. The building in plan shall include a grand hall with modern design which is also suitable for concert performance. Once the building is completed, it will add one more venue which is good for cultural and arts performance in Ipoh.

St Andrew Festival organising committee will give the entire surplus arising from the La Traviata opera show to the church’s Building Fund.
